“Music is so extraordinarily full of magic, and in tough times of my life I can listen to music and it makes such a difference.” – Kurt Vonnegut
Multiple genres from around the world. Thumpin’ beats and universal rhythms. From absolute beginners to seriously focused budding artist, A Place Called Home taps into the cultural lifeblood of South Los Angeles and helps our members turn it up a notch through professional-level music education and recording and performance opportunities. Program participants set and meet high standards on their way to a harmonious, promising future that celebrates their creative talents.
More than 250 students per year train in a variety of instruments, taking courses in theory, music appreciation, recording, audio production, performance ensemble, and voice, in one-on-one and ensemble classes. Advanced students prepare for college-level studies and scholarship applications. (Visitors to APCH may hear performances on piano, voice, guitar, saxophone, flute, percussion, strings, and plenty more.)
Thanks to APCH’s longstanding partnership with Berklee College of Music, and as a Charter Member of Berklee’s national City Music Network program, we offer opportunities to refine musicianship at one of the best music schools in the world. Dedicated students in the APCH Music Department can audition for scholarships to attend Berklee’s five-week summer program in Boston. As of 2012, two-dozen APCH youth have attended this program, and four have received scholarships to 4-year degree programs at Berklee.
Key to our activities is the PULSE (Pre-University Learning System Experience) method, designed by Berklee faculty to engage youth in music training with unique, cutting-edge, online learning resources. Additionally, our on-site digital recording studio allows students to produce CDs containing their own original music, using state-of-the-art equipment.
Our Performances & CD
The APCH Band, 29LIVE, is a rotating ensemble of our students, with an impressive repertoire. The band regularly performs at street fairs, private events, and popular music scene venues such as The House of Blues, The Key Club, and The Troubador. APCH ensembles and individual performers have opened for notable artists, including The Isley Brothers, Thrice, The Black Eyed Peas, Ozomatli and Diana Ross.
Each year we produce an original CD, written, performed, recorded and engineered by students in our Music Department. Check out the latest sounds from APCH!
